Set within a stunning coastal location in Pembrokeshire, this project involved the design and construction of a 15.8m x 19m steel building, providing our client with a dedicated and secure space for vehicle storage.
The project presented a number of logistical and construction challenges, largely due to the site's peninsula location, restricted access, sloping ground and exposed coastal conditions. Careful planning and coordination were therefore essential from the outset to ensure the building could be delivered and constructed efficiently.
The Client's Requirements
The primary requirement was to create a large, practical storage facility that would provide the space needed to accommodate the client's vehicles.
The building needed to be robust, well insulated and suitable for its coastal setting, while the overall project also included the groundworks and foundations, allowing us to provide a complete solution from site preparation through to the finished steel building.
Overcoming Site Challenges
One of the biggest challenges on this project was access to the site.
Located on a peninsula, the site had particularly tight access, meaning that standard delivery arrangements could not simply be assumed. Our logistics team carefully planned the transportation of materials, ensuring that deliveries were made using vehicles of the appropriate size for the access available.
This detailed planning helped minimise disruption and ensured that materials could reach the site safely and efficiently despite the restricted conditions.
The site itself also presented challenges due to its sloping ground. To accommodate the ground conditions and provide a suitable foundation for the building, a thickened raft foundation was required.
The coastal location also meant that the building and construction process had to be carefully considered in relation to the surrounding environment and exposed conditions.
The Building
The completed steel building measures 15.8m x 19m, with a 3m eaves height, creating a substantial internal space for vehicle storage.
The building incorporates 80mm insulation, providing improved thermal performance and helping create a more suitable internal environment for the client's requirements.
As part of the project, Midbrook also completed the groundworks, including the specialist foundation solution required for the sloping site.

Logistics and Planning
Projects with restricted access require detailed preparation long before construction begins.
For this project, our team worked closely with the logistics operation to plan how materials would reach the site, taking into consideration the size and suitability of delivery vehicles.
By assessing the access requirements in advance and coordinating deliveries accordingly, we were able to ensure the necessary materials arrived on site safely and in the correct sequence.
This is a good example of why every steel building project needs to be considered on an individual basis. The building itself is only one part of the process; site conditions, access, foundations, transportation and installation all need to work together.
The Result
Despite the challenging site conditions and restricted access, the project was successfully delivered, providing our client with a substantial new space for vehicle storage.
The finished building sits within an impressive coastal landscape, demonstrating how a carefully planned steel building can be successfully delivered even where the site presents significant logistical and construction challenges.
