what we did...

Midbrook Steel Buildings was approached by a client seeking a compact domestic steel building designed for secure storage of agricultural tools and beekeeping equipment. Although smaller in scale than many commercial projects, this bespoke timber-clad domestic steel building demonstrates how steel-framed buildings can work just as effectively on domestic land for non-residential use, particularly in rural settings.

Although smaller in scale than many commercial or industrial projects, this bespoke timber-clad domestic steel building demonstrates how steel buildings can be an ideal solution for domestic land where durability, longevity and appearance are all equally important.

Domestic Steel Building for Non-Residential Use

This project is a clear example of how a domestic steel building can be used effectively on private land without being residential in nature. The building is not intended for living accommodation and was designed solely for storage and equipment use.

By combining a robust steel frame with natural timber cladding, the finished building delivers the strength and low-maintenance benefits of steel building construction, while maintaining an appearance that suits domestic and rural surroundings.

Design & Specification

The client required a practical yet visually sympathetic building that would offer long-term protection from the elements. Key specifications included:

  • Building size: 6m x 6m

  • Eaves height: 2.8m

  • Structure: Steel framed building

  • Cladding: Horizontal larch timber cladding

  • Insulation: 40mm / 40mm insulated panels

  • Use: Domestic (non-residential) storage

These specifications ensured the building was thermally efficient, weather-resistant and fit for purpose, while remaining compact enough for a domestic property.

Turnkey Delivery by Midbrook Steel Buildings

As with many of Midbrook’s projects, this domestic steel building was delivered as a complete turnkey solution. Our team managed the entire process, giving the client a single point of contact from start to finish.

Our scope of works included:

  • Groundworks and concrete slab preparation

  • Steel frame manufacture and erection

  • Installation of insulated panels

  • Timber cladding installation

  • Planning permission support

  • Overall project management and coordination

The building progressed efficiently and was completed within a three-week programme, with only the roller shutter door installation outstanding at the final inspection stage.

Timber Cladding for a Natural Finish

To ensure the building blended seamlessly with its surroundings, horizontal larch timber cladding was selected. This provided a warm, natural aesthetic while still benefiting from the strength and longevity of a steel framed structure behind it.

This combination makes timber-clad steel buildings particularly well suited to domestic land, rural properties and sensitive settings where appearance matters just as much as performance.

The Result

The completed domestic steel building delivers a secure, low-maintenance storage solution that meets the client’s practical needs without compromising on visual appeal. The client was delighted with both the build quality and the smooth delivery process, commenting on how efficiently the project came together.

This case study highlights how steel buildings aren’t limited to large commercial or industrial applications — they can be equally effective for bespoke domestic storage buildings where residential use is not required.
