what we did...

The esteemed Railway Vehicle Preservation Society sought a sturdy solution to house their cherished collection of historic railway carriages in Swithland, Leicestershire and we were delighted that they turned to us here at Midbrook Steel Buildings. Renowned for our expertise in steel frame buildings, we eagerly embraced this unique challenge.

Project Scope

The task at hand was clear: supply and fit a bespoke steel-framed building spanning 19m x 65m. Our primary objective? To provide a secure storage facility for the railway carriages, all while ensuring strict adherence to building regulations.

Key Features

Dual Pitch Design: Our steel building design featured a dual-pitch roof, cleverly maximising internal space to accommodate the railway carriages comfortably.

Cladding Specification: The majority of the building boasted robust single-skin cladding, offering unparalleled protection against the elements. To bolster thermal efficiency and climate control, one elevation was outfitted with insulated cladding.

Fire Safety Measures: Recognising the paramount importance of safety, we meticulously fire boarded the columns of the steel frame building to meet stringent building regulations, ensuring optimal protection for the stored railway carriages.

Foundation and Track Installation: A stable foundation is the cornerstone of any enduring structure. We securely fixed the steel building to individual pads, providing the necessary stability for long-term durability. Additionally, we seamlessly integrated the train track into the structure, facilitating smooth operations once the steel framework was in place.

Project Execution

Despite the complexity of the project, our team at Midbrook Steel Buildings rose to the occasion, showcasing exceptional efficiency. With unwavering dedication, we completed the construction within a concise 5-week programme. Each phase of the project, from erecting the steel frame to installing the cladding and fireproofing measures, was executed with precision by our skilled workforce.

The culmination of our efforts resulted in the successful completion of a state-of-the-art storage facility for the Railway Vehicle Preservation Society. This facility now houses their invaluable collection of railway carriages, safeguarding these historic artifacts for generations to come. With robust construction, advanced insulation, and stringent fire safety measures, we ensure the preservation of Britain’s railway heritage remains our utmost priority.
