A Bespoke Steel Building for a School in Croydon

When a school in Croydon needed to relocate and expand its existing laundry facility, Midbrook Steel Buildings was appointed to design, supply and install a new purpose-built steel building.

The school required a practical, fully insulated building that could accommodate its laundry facilities while fitting into a particularly restricted area of the existing school site.

With a bespoke steel-framed building, we were able to design the new facility around both the available space and the school's specific operational requirements.

The Finer Details

The new school building measures 8m x 11.4m with an eaves height of 2.6m and features 40mm insulated composite panels to both the walls and roof.

The steel building was designed specifically for its intended use as a laundry facility, with the school having particular requirements for the positioning of doors, windows and access points.

The completed building includes:

  • 8m width
  • 11.4m length
  • 2.6m eaves height
  • 40mm insulated wall panels
  • 40mm insulated roof panels
  • 2 x single steel security doors
  • 1 x double steel security door
  • 1 x heavy-duty steel fire exit door
  • Polycarbonate rooflights
  • Juniper Green external finish

Every element was designed around the school's requirements, demonstrating the flexibility available with a bespoke steel building rather than an off-the-shelf solution.

Overcoming a Challenging School Site

One of the biggest challenges with this project was the building's location.

The new facility had to be installed within a tight space between two existing structures on the school site. This meant careful planning and precision throughout the installation to ensure the new building integrated successfully with its surroundings and remained completely watertight.

Our team worked carefully within the restricted area and successfully completed the steel building installation in approximately two weeks.

For schools where space is often limited, a bespoke steel-framed building can be designed around existing facilities and available areas of the site, making it a flexible option for creating much-needed additional space.

Designed Around the School's Requirements

No two school building projects are the same, which is why we work closely with our customers throughout the design process.

For this project, the school had specific requirements for the positioning of doors and windows to ensure the finished building worked effectively as a working laundry facility.

Our design team incorporated these requirements into the plans before manufacture, allowing the building to be tailored around how the school intended to use the space.

This bespoke approach can be applied to a wide variety of education buildings, whether additional space is required for storage, classrooms, workshops, sports facilities, maintenance buildings or other specialist uses.

A New School Facility Ready in Weeks

Despite the restricted site and bespoke requirements, the installation itself was completed in approximately three weeks, providing the school with its new facility with minimal disruption.

Once complete, the school even held an official opening ceremony, with the Headmaster cutting the ribbon to mark the opening of the new laundry building.

And one of the best signs of a successful handover? The school is already discussing another potential project with Midbrook.

We're delighted with the finished building and look forward to hopefully working with the school again in the future.

Why Choose a Steel Building for a School?

Steel-framed buildings can provide schools, colleges and other education settings with a flexible way to create additional space without being limited to a standard building design.

Buildings can be designed around the available site, required dimensions, insulation levels, access points and intended use.

At Midbrook, we can provide everything from steel building design, supply and installation through to more comprehensive turnkey packages, depending on the requirements of the project.

Our bespoke steel buildings can be used for a wide range of school and education facilities, including:

  • School storage buildings
  • Sports and PE storage
  • Maintenance facilities
  • Workshops
  • Additional teaching and activity spaces
  • Equipment storage
  • Specialist operational buildings
  • Community and extracurricular facilities

Whether you're looking for a relatively small building to make better use of unused space or a much larger education facility, our team can design a steel building around your school's requirements.

How Much Does a Steel Building for a School Cost?

The cost of a school steel building can vary considerably depending on its size, specification, insulation, location and individual site requirements.

As a general guide, a project similar to this could fall within the region of £35,000–£55,000 + VAT, depending on the final specification.

Factors that can affect the overall cost include the size and height of the building, level of insulation, number and type of doors and windows, site access, ground conditions, location, planning and Building Control requirements, and whether additional turnkey services are required.

Every project is different, so we recommend speaking to our team for an accurate quotation based on your school's site and requirements.

*Indicative costs are provided as a guide only and are subject to specification, site conditions and individual project requirements.
